SEYCHELLES …..YOU ARE THE ICING ON MY CAKE…..

~ MY INSPIRATION ~

As many of you have figured out by now, NORTH ISLAND Seychelles is one of my design inspiration locations. It was also the honeymoon location for Prince William and Kate ! This incredible island destination, is a designer heaven. It inspires me and helps me to keep my eye on the prize. I just look at these pictures, and it makes me want to hop on a plane and shop in Bali to recreate this vision-warmth-feel. Almost every item in these photos is from Bali. The attention to detail is remarkable. We all need, and are encouraged my inspirational projects. This one is mine ~ my inspiration ~

All of these photos are from North Island, Seychelles. I am currently working on a home in the Seychelles which is a creole style home set on the hillside overlooking the sea and…you guessed it….North Island . Talk about punishment, I am forced to look at it, and they still won’t let me set foot on the island. I have bought all the goods, including construction materials from Bali. Yes, this sounds glamorous and sounds like a client must have ooooodles of money. Hope you are sitting down, it is not like that at all. We work hard to keep our costs at a minimum,  and work with simple stream lined looks.

It takes high maintenance to make a place look like low maintenance. Just like men. hahaha. They take a lot of work, to make them look so dignified and streamlined/ low maintenance. Whatev. Most of those men look HAWT, because a woman dressed them. Someone is going to holler at me for saying that. I will take my chances.

I have “dragged my butt to Bali” three times now. I know, that sounds horrible. Poor me. I was just feeling sorry for myself as I write this post.

Asking me to go to Bali is like handing a kid a lolly pop and telling them that they can stare at it or lick it for just a second. Helloooooo…..it is not possible in my world to say “NOOOoooo, I will not go”. They must drag me by my hair, and I go kicking, but I take one for the team and hop that plane to Bali.

It takes me about three seconds to consider the work it would take, the co-ordination to make it all happen, the phone meetings, ahhhhrrrrr~ those tedious thoughts tire me * meeting = boring = yawn *. Whenever I feel those thoughts making their way into my thought pattern, I remind myself of my favourite design inspiration places ~ like NORTH ISLAND, SEYCHELLES. Gotta keep my eye on the prize …..

I look at design this way….

Find what inspires you

Do it because you love to do it

Work with integrity and love in your heart

Be passionate

Remember it is not just about the end product, it is about the journey getting to it

Be honest, be kind, play nice

No one likes to work with a meanie

Only ask others to do, what you would be willing to do yourself

Live it , love it and have a good laugh doing it

Talk less, do More

Yup, that’s right…TALK LESS, DO MORE. So much time is wasted in note taking, long boring meetings, blah blah…just get out there and get er’ done. I ( like most people ) spend enough time doing the “HAVE TO’S “, believe me, they get done. They HAVE TO. I do those budgets, meetings and excel spread sheets. However, if an excel spread sheet had a face, I would punch it. I do the note taking, the preparations, and voice mail. Again though, even voice mail is like JAIL to me. If you really hate me, leave me a voice mail. We can spend time in voice mail jail together. If you want to dump me as a friend, leave me a 10 minute voice mail. I would leave the country before I listen to it in its entirety. I would need to retire on a tropical island and sell coconuts or head straight to the psych ward. Take your pick.

Keeping design simple, does sound simple, but hey, it actually isn’t. I love getting lost in the details, but I try not to get lost in the weeds. I also have an appreciation for the hard work and dedication it takes to make it all look simple and effortless. I have met the woman who makes the shell/ jute rope hanging in these photos. I know what it takes to create those. She loves her work, and it shows.

Being a designer is like being a good hostess. A good hostess is like a swan on water. That swan may look smooth and elegant on the surface, but it is paddling like hell under water. Otherwise, sunk swan. Uhmm, that would not be so puurty. I am already feeling sorry for that Swan. So, I , like that freakin swan, paddle like hell, but hopefully, most would never know it.  Except, I suppose I am busted now. Just told my trade secret :-)

I have a few other trade secrets to confess to. Now I am on a roll, huh? “Filter Lynne, filter. You have one, use it. You are in the danger zone of telling all your magic secrets.” No worries kids, I have no problem sharing with sugar bear. Note to self : I may have to enter a confessional at this rate.

Most often my best design ideas come from driving down the road, lost in thought….or some other ricochet effect that happens from one event to another. I could spend hours preparing for meetings, planning a design, articulating it on paper, only to change the whole plan on my car drive to the office for the planning meeting. EVERY SINGLE TIME, my client went for my idea that I dreamt up in my head on the way to the meeting. I bet my clients are reading this right now, saying HOLY SHIT, that is how she rolls ? After they get over the shock of that statement, I promise I never let them down, and they loved those ideas. Oh , to be in my brain.

I design simple. Our minds are cluttered enough. I believe in keeping things to a comfortable minimum. Who needs to look at clutter ? On an every day basis, my motto is to keep things in your home that you love and enjoy…other than that…OUT YOU GO. Yes, that includes people and things. If you don’t like them, don’t invite them and don’t put those “things”  in your house. Evict them.  Don’t mess with mojo. Surround yourself with what brings a smile to your face.

Free your mind, free your space. Don’t make the entire space naked ~ just simplify it. Leave nakedness to the times when your in-laws are coming, and you want to start some family rumours. Someone has to be the black sheep and spice it up. Everyone would be bored if those moments of embarrassment didn’t happen.

So for all that unnecessary clutter…..give it away (that also feels so good to do), put it away, but move it out so you feel as free as a bird. When you are done, come and see me. We will sit an celebrate with a glass of wine. Ps. Come soon, I need wine.
